Going to school across the country requires you to move out of the home you've lived in for so long. I moved out of my childhood home when I came to college, and by the time it was time for me to visit home, my parents had also moved across the country. So in the span of two months, I had to make two places I live feel like my home. And that was when I realized it is about how you fill your space.
I like to fill my space with pictures of my family and my best friends because when I think of what feels like "home", I think of them. Just looking at a picture of them gives me that sense of comfort that they are here with me.
Being at school in my apartment, I am lucky enough to live with my best friend, who has really helped it feel like "our" home. We do things like make dinner together and watch TV on our couch, and just feel the comfort of being together. Her name is Ashlyn, and we do mostly everything together if we are not at work. Living with her has taught me that where I live does not define my home, but it is the feeling I get inside of that home. When I walk inside my apartment after a rough exam or a long day at work, and I see Ashlyn on the couch waiting for me so we can watch a show, I feel that sense of security and that home feeling.
When I am at my parents' home and my new home in Nashville, I like to just spend quality time with them, my sister, and my dog. This house quickly felt like a home to me because of my family. No matter where I am and they are with me, it feels like home. When I am home for an extended period of time, we like to watch weekly shows together on Sunday nights.
As for my own room, since I am by myself, I can not sleep without a certain stuffed animal that my sister picked out for me. This stuffed animal is a unicorn that gives me the biggest sense of security because it reminds me of my sister every time I go to sleep.
