To me, home is so much more than an apartment, dorm, or house. It's a place of stability, comfort, and good memories. This year I have the privilege of living with three of my very best friends, in an apartment here in Knoxville. Today I want to share with you guys more about what makes our 1100 square feet more than just walls and furniture - and what makes it truly home to me.
1- My roommates!!!!
Everyday I feel so lucky to wake up and see my roommates, Ava, Avery, and Ingrid. We do just about everything together. Ingrid and I love catching up every Monday and Wednesday while we walk to class together. Sometimes if it's and extra tired day, we'll decide to go to Chick Fil A instead of class - but we try not to make it a habit. When the weather is nice, Ava and I love going for a walk in Sequoyah Hills. We talk about all the houses we like and don't like, and stop at Rocky Top Nutrition on the way home. Avery and I are big shoppers, we will take just about any chance we can get to go buy something new. Whether it's a day at West Town Mall, or a quick run to a boutique before a game day, I know she's always down. These however are just specific things I love that come to mind, but we truly do anything and everything together.
2 - Celebrations
One thing I love about my home, is that we will find any excuse to celebrate ANYTHING! Birthdays are a big deal around here - but so are good grades on tests, successful workouts, and obviously Vol wins. Sometimes the celebration is just Dairy Queen after a long day, sometimes it's all of our friends together on the rooftop pool. Knowing that my roommates and friends are always cheering me on makes me so excited to come home everyday. I know they love supporting me as much as I love supporting them.
3 - New experiences
Not one single person in my apartment knows how to cook anything at all. This might sound awful but hear me out, figuring it out together has been one of the most fun parts of living together. We've learned how to make pasta (and make sure the water is boiling)! And we will put just about anything in the air fryer if we can. We have yet to tackle any kind of meat, but that's just one more thing we can figure out together. New experiences aren't just limited to cooking though. It's also learning what to do when the fridge breaks, finding a place to get a car fixed after running into a fire extinguisher, and looking for a fun new workout class to try. Regardless of what it may be, I know I won't be doing it alone.
I am able to experience all of these things because I am fortunate enough to live in a home with stability, comfort, and good memories. It is a safe space that is mine to live in and enjoy. This is why I feel so passionately about the fundraising we are doing for the Volunteer Ministry Center. Everyone deserves to have a space to hang out with friends/roommates, celebrate the big and small, and try new things with the people they love. The VMC serves those in need with a variety of services, including rapid housing. It is our goal to help as many people as we can find a home too. One filled with stability, comfort, and good memories too.
